Died suddenly, at his home in Chomedey, Laval, Quebec, at the age of ninety.
Son of the late Gladys Therould Harracksingh and the late Fitz Harracksingh Kelly was predeceased by his sister Molly and his brother Alwin. He is survived by his siblings: Shirley Charlesworth, Katie Phillips, Popsie Hall, Maralyne Dookeran, and Franklyn Harracksingh.
Father to: Cliff Harracksingh (Renuka), Carla Janes, Kelly-Ann Harracksingh (Jerome)
Grandfather to: Ryan Harracksingh, Devin Harracksingh (Chandni Pattni), Brett Janes, Brodie Janes and Amari Harracksingh-Meosa. Kelvin was born on January 19, 1935, in Curepe, Trinidad and Tobago. In high school he was a gifted 100-yard runner and the immensely proud winner of many trophies.
He came to Montreal in August 1964. He completed his BA majoring in political science at Concordia University (1968). He also completed his Class One Diploma in Education at McGill University (1973) which qualified him to teach all levels of English.
Whilst studying, he spent his summers working for Canadian Pacific Railway, which provided him with the opportunity to visit many Canadian and American cities.
His entire career was as an Educator. He taught all levels of English and Political Science at Sir Wilfred Laurier School Board. He eventually became the Department Head of the English Department and Vice Principal of the evening Adult Education program. After his retirement, he continued as a substitute teacher between 2002 – 2004.
Kelvin (Mr. H) taught English at Chomedey High School for over 30 years, leaving a lasting impression on his students. Many students appreciated his engaging teaching style, and he remains fondly remembered by numerous individuals as their preferred high school educator.
Kelly participated in various clubs and organizations from 1966 to 1999. He held executive positions in cultural and recreational associations in Quebec. Some of these were the Montreal All-Fours Association, Naparima Alumni, Hilltoppers Sports and Cultural Club, the Black Community Council of Quebec, and Ville Laval Black Community Association.
Kelvin found joy in the simple things like “All Fours” cards, horse racing, gardening, and his Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche.
He was an avid reader who owned hundreds of books. He loved a good western movie or novel.
His prized possession was his pet cat “Baby” who was adopted by a family friend.
He was known for appreciating a well-told story. He was usually the storyteller, who could laugh at himself and make everyone else laugh with him. His legacy and stories will live on through his family and the numerous lives he touched as an educator.
Celebration of Life will be held on May 18th at 10:00 a.m. at Cooperative Funeraire du Grand Montreal
A reception will be held immediately following the ceremony.
