Sustainable Choice Certification

To help consumers make informed choices regarding products offered directly by funeral cooperatives or through their partner suppliers, the Fédération des Coopératives Funéraires du Québec (FCFQ) has established its own certification program. This certification highlights products offered by member cooperatives that support sustainable community development while meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own.

Products covered by the FCFQ certification include those offered by member cooperatives, such as caskets, cremation containers, urns, keepsakes, and memorial products.

Three categories have been established to promote the principles of sustainability: environmental, economic, and social:

  • Environmental Component: The criteria focus on the raw materials used in the product's composition.
  • Social Component: The criteria primarily examine the type of company that manufactures the product, the working conditions of its employees, and the causes or initiatives supported by the company within its community.
  • Economic Component: The criteria consider the economic benefits for the community by encouraging local purchasing. Raw materials are sourced in Québec, and the product is entirely manufactured or assembled within the province.

The Certification Process

An FCFQ certification application applies to one product at a time. For locally produced items, the certification process primarily benefits the cooperative offering the product. For products distributed across the network, the certification benefits all member cooperatives.
